What is it about?

Amaro Records is a unique combination of a recording studio and a training café. It was created with the help of more than one hundred volunteers, both from the Romani community and the general public, at the premises formerly occupied by a gambling house in Brno. “Amaro” means “ours” in Romani. Whoever loves music and disregards artificial social barriers is welcome here.

Appreciation of the Jury

Amaro Records has achieved an innovative mixture around music: creation & recreation. Music – Roma music – is made, produced, and reproduced. It is the means to an end and it is an end in itself. More than a hundred volunteers, Roma and non-Roma, have put in their efforts, have learnt together and have contributed to accomplish all this. Their commitment is to also pay off commercially: a social profit enterprise is the objective. Amaro Records’ location at the edge of the central, “beautiful” part of town and facing the “excluded” parts, puts it into both sides’ sight. This is self-organised inclusion, and it is supported by the district administration. As stated: an innovate mixture.
