The shortage of housing is a widespread symptom of poverty in Hungary. These students have noted the problem and are developing a project here with multiple impacts: houses are being renovated, energy costs slashed and rent arrears reduced; collaboration with (inter)national volunteers has injected new life into the settlement with the community exchanging rent arrears for an improvement in the value of the housing stock. The enthusiasm of the project instigators is certainly beginning to bear fruits. Fantastic political and social sensitivity is developing into concrete support. We very much hope that there will be lots more Social Housing Reconstruction Camps to come – with exemplary results!

Simple to apply with impressive consequences. A complex issue is disseminated through play to make it comprehensible to children: what does being poor mean to me? Where do I place the boundary between rich and poor? Children should have opinions and be able to express an argument as well as being sensitive to social issues. They need to find solutions to the poverty of the children featured in the 10 stories. The game clearly and carefully motivates children to develop thoughts on this issue and even the organisers are not immune! Let’s hope that ‘Poverty line?!’ is applied in various different ways to help define narrower boundaries for poverty!

It is hard to believe that the more than 10,000 children being raised outside of the family home in Austria have not had access to this before now: an illustrated book aimed at their age group and ideal for confronting their own often unhappy life to date. Compiled into several feedback stages, ‘Sarah und die Wolke’ tells the tale of a problematic family where life for the children is difficult and sometimes impossible. This is unfortunately a very necessary tool which will hopefully help to break the cycle of abuse within some families as well as raising awareness of the issue among political decision-makers. The next book begins on page 39, with Franz at the table...

Young people observe their everyday environment and capture any exclusive behaviour, xenophobic images or racist statements through photography. The images are then displayed as part of the ‘Everyday racism’ exhibition as something to confront, discuss, explain, fight against and somehow prevent. It is a matter of increasing social awareness of the fact that violence against those weaker than ourselves is a matter of cowardice and that young people need to see through structural violence in order to develop social responsibility and courage so that simply looking away is no longer such an easy thing to do. Applied youth work with social intelligence.

During their first or second year of training workshops, trainees are prepared to lead a financially independent life, with the training tailored to their specific situation in life. Voluntary experts at the ‘I €an – Workshops’ adopt a preventative approach to ensure that the young people learn to handle the greed associated with consumption in our economic system, in line with their social status. This will ensure that they remain as debt-free as possible. We very much hope that the workshops achieve their goal and not just in Vienna but also elsewhere in Austria, as planned.

Blind and visually impaired people can also produce radio programmes independently using specially developed technical support tools. It’s not just about hearing but also about making yourself heard. Free radio is ideal for this as the ‘Ohrenblicke’ project shows – the participants learn the technical and editorial aspects of radio work to complement their studies and learn how to present issues to the listeners and provoke discussion from a professional perspective. You do not have to see to be able to listen. You cannot see any differences between people when producing radio. So we want to see this project introduced everywhere, not just in Salzburg.

What better way for people to come together in mainstream society than through a concrete demonstration of what they can do? As locals, we can draw on the skills of those who come to us. They can teach us as course organisers and they have the experience of us being their students. They can also improve their knowledge of German and earn some money, which would otherwise be impossible for some of them. KAMA offers a framework for asylum applicants, migrants and asylum seekers to adopt a more self-confident approach to the realities of society in Austria – without receiving any state support. Unfortunately this is not something which can be taken for granted – which is why we are highlighting it here.

The significance of these ‘local meetings between police officers and members of the Roma community’ is evident against the backdrop of the increasing nationalization of politics and a police union which comprises around 18% of police and in 2009 entered into cooperation with the far right-wing Jobbik movement – partly due to its symbolic power and partly to avoid leaving safety issues to the right-wing political fringe and its shocking effects on social cohesion. Courageous, necessary and all party encompassing for a secure and more understanding cohabitation. It would certainly be useful to reduce the social rift!

Since sign language is not very widespread outside of the world of the hearing impaired, the online dictionary is a fantastic aid to enormously improve everyday communication with those who can hear. The widespread availability of internet access means that use of the dictionary is very low-threshold. Translations can be accessed quickly almost everywhere and the available word count is constantly being increased. Sign language is therefore becoming a normal national foreign language. The dictionary is currently only available in Hungarian but will hopefully soon encompass other languages.

These female advisors are using advice sessions, home visits, workshops and their status as role models to show Chechen women and girls how discriminatory perceptions of the role of women can hinder their development and progression in Austrian society. The Chechen ‘Frauenrat’ (women’s council) are drawing on a trusted and respected term from the women’s former homelands and incorporating elements of Chechen tradition in order to guide these Chechen women in their new lives and help them understand Austrian laws and customs. Motivated women tackling female issues within their own ethnic background – a beneficial mix which will hopefully become more widespread.
