The children's hospice network is unique in German-speaking countries in providing this combination of services. What is of central importance is that the illness is not considered in isolation from its social context. The work of the children’s hospice team is needs-driven. Instead of erecting parallel structures, it createsones that are connected and complementary, and it highlights the need for health policy action in the field of palliative and terminal care for children and adolescents. Financed almost exclusively through private donations, the network strives to integrate children’s palliative care into the public health system through its own advocacy work, which is in part political. We hope that with this award we can help you in this work.

‘Eltern.chat’ was invented because standard, lecture-based educational sessions held at locations removed from the family did not function. It is nimble but clearly structured and hires moderators who guide and keep discussions on topic within a private social network. It also works well for women with non-Austrian roots. The novel setup makes the most of their openness towards education. The system is self-managing with a central framework, and easily expandable. It contributes to the practice of communal learning – one-eighth of communities in Vorarlberg are already participating. We hope it will spread even further.

Land lying fallow is transformed into the collective experience of a garden setting for children and pre-teens from the city; in this way, untapped potential is used to accomplish social, integrative learning. It is achieved not as the obvious goal, but in a ‘by-the-way’ fashion. Emphasis is placed on understanding nature’s cycles. Social engagement is also fostered as a result. The possibility of design and layout becomes a lived experience and the opportunity to open up to oneself and to others. A great diversity of things grow both in nature and in the social sphere...There is rest and movement, freedom and quiet. This is a simple, but varied project. We hope the structural basis for the widest possible dissemination of the Junior City Farmer can be created.

Finished art from society’s margins: the homeless write about ‘home’. This contradiction grabs attention, so that we who are not homeless dare look. The changed frame re-redirects our gaze, giving us a different focus. The view that the authors have of themselves also changes and they become more self-aware. We hope that some people’s social awareness has even been changed as a result. Another Street Book is planned in 2012 on the subject of ‘Paths’. This book will also present street newspaper vendors who are not Austrian. The SozialMarie jury hopes it will enjoy at least equally great success.

The subject covers what it means to be different, prejudices against socially marginalised people and (clichéd) images in a homophobic context. Coupled with the concept of peer education and adult participation, the isolation of same-sex adolescent partners and discrimination against them can, in the best-case scenario, be prevented and counteracted. The out@school workshops are immediately provocative and work towards increasing the sense of naturalness of different varieties of love and relationship. They encourage a strong and public stand against homophobia, and strengthen affected youth. This is a bold initiative, which we want to put on a more stable footing. We hope that the programme will be implemented in schools nationwide.

Women, who themselves or whose parents immigrated or fled to Austria, are disadvantaged on the Austrian labour market. They belong to the 'working poor' and tend not to attract the interest of lobbying activists. We appreciate the work of the Integration Assistance Programme all the more because it is difficult for such women to pull themselves out of their social plight. We wish to show our recognition both for the practical work and the intention of convincing companies to pay for this service. We hope that the project increases awareness of the need for (more) dignified conditions for women working in the low-wage sector.

The village service jumps in if help is needed. It is flexible and unbureaucratic, acting as a social hub, linking communities in a network and facilitating participation. Enquiries are made into what the communities need and concrete needs are addressed. A professionally managed framework gives backup to the volunteers, security to the people seeking help, and space for social development to the region. This combination is, we hope, an effective remedy against emigration. If the public sector would clearly commit itself financially, geographical expansion would be easier. We hope the SozialMarie 2012 will be of help in that.

The fact that personal history becomes more important in old age and cultural and linguistic features play a central role is a matter of everyday care in the nursing home in Nikitsch. Fairly simple, but effective measures are adopted in order to make the stay for persons in need of nursing services a more dignified experience. This is especially true of those numerous residents who suffer from dementia, as it is obviously easier for them to speak of their memories in Croatian.By granting this award, we hope to highlight this bilingualism in a nursing centre in Nikitsch as a model for other bilingual regions in Austria.

Chtějí-li tak obě strany, je udržení vztahu mezi rodičem a dítětem, resp. dětmi příznivé pro psychické a sociální zdraví dětí a důležité pro reintegraci uvězněných osob. Jde o to, umožnit nejen návštěvy a kontakty, ale také přesvědčit vedení vězeňských institucí o ulehčení těchto kontaktů a dát najevo společnosti, že tyto kontakty mají smysl. Pomáhat v konkrétních případech, snažit se o změnu mainstreamového a předsudky ovlivněného smýšlení společnosti a zvýšit v jednotlivých zemích povědomí o tom, že děti mají právo na kontakt se svým uvězněným rodičem – to je komplexní úkol, kterého se rádi zhošťujeme!

The distribution of public resources is a key economic policy instrument whereby the distribution of resources and thus power relations are determined. The involvement of the population in shaping the budget increases transparency in public administration and aims for the socially just and demand-oriented construction of the public budget. Negotiating distribution on a consensual basis strengthens democratic political understanding and civic engagement. For these reasons, we wish the Slovak initiative every success and would like to underscore this by awarding the SozialMarie prize.
