Tackling new poverty in role-plays and theatrical performances strengthens the persons involved directly, makes poverty an issue which can be discussed and, at the same time, provides further-reaching impetus at political level to combat and prevent poverty. The ongoing scientific analysis and evaluation guarantees further development and a foundation for argument. This is a successful combination of political-participatory theatre, sound socio-political criticism and targeted measures, which is both complex and specific. May the nationwide expansion of the project in 2010 achieve the same demonstrable results as it has in Styria!

Two worlds with completely different focuses are working together. The aim of this working relationship is to contradict the image that society, i.e. all of us, have of people with disabilities and their capabilities. People with disabilities are producing luxury goods. The budding designers of the University of Applied Sciences consider the production conditions of workshops for people with disabilities. The Porsche Design Studio can show its creativity in a completely different way. I do not buy LebensDESIGN products out of pity, but because of the brand. It is already planned to expand the project. We hope that it succeeds. Particularly, in people’s minds!

Schoolchildren from difficult social backgrounds acquire social skills and self-confidence for their future life, parental education is supplemented, the class community is supported, the burden is removed from the class teachers, the students are prepared for their future professional life in a way which more closely reflects reality. There is an immediate positive effect which is visible from the behaviour of the Mowglis or from the fact that having a Baloo is considered to be an honour, from the dedication of the students and teachers, from the scientific results. This is a small – but efficient – way of correcting the ‘social gap’ in education. We hope that it will be expanded and imitated!

Low-threshold, anonymous, mother tongue, accepting. Irrespective of whether or not the women are providing sexual services (anymore), whether or not they want to do something else, the Place of Education for Sex Workers establishes trust. An exclusive place makes discrimination visible and facilitates the discussion of problems. Specialised and socio-politically targeted public relations also aim to increase sex workers’ public scope of action. And if they know their rights and obligations, they may want to successfully fight for these – vis-à-vis the authorities, punters and the police. May their scope of action continue to be enlarged!

Within the context of a large geriatric centre, a ward has been reorganised to ‘primary nursing’, to a homely atmosphere, so that procedures are geared towards the individual(s), that the hospital does not take priority, but rather ‘normal’ life. The health of the residents is improving, as demonstrated not least by all by the ongoing scientific evaluation, whilst employees’ absenteeism has reduced by 20%. Therefore, two more wards are being reorganised. A courageous and encouraging measure for elderly people. We hope that, in a few years’ time, all 9 wards will be geared towards ‘normal daily life’.

People with and without learning difficulties and disabilities teach organisations and institutions how to deal with the topic of ‘Disability, equal opportunities and accessibility’ in a meaningful way, experts with learning difficulties and disabilities are also working as qualified workshop and seminar leaders, so that their experiences are incorporated into the learning. It’s really obvious, isn’t it? We would like to express our appreciation that, thanks to this project, something that should be obvious – not learning about, but learning from people with disabilities – is finding its way into practice.

This project finally recognises the importance of linguistic and intercultural competence for sensitive and successful action by police officers – true to their motto: “Understanding one another through having an understanding of one another.” And, in addition to learning the language, the project is in particular also concerned with changing police officers’ own attitudes toward foreigner(s), with initiating reflection processes. Other countries have already expressed an interest … Let’s hope that a respectful police presence will change the image of the police in all of our minds, our own minds and those of foreigners!

Jung, unabhängig und gleichzeitig gut eingebunden. Ein umtriebiges Netzwerk als Plattform und Einladung an jeden und jede BewohnerIn für ein Aktivsein im Sinne der – sozial noch fragilen – Gemeinschaft in einem schon zu lange vernachlässigten Teil der Budapester Josefstadt. Stadtteilzeitung, Videoblog, Straßenfestival, Kunstaktion, Workshops, Tauschflohmark,… – die BewohnerInnen organisieren sich selbst. Vielfältiges community development, eine grassroots-Bewegung von der feinsten Sorte. Wir wünschen der umsichtigen Energie der AktivistInnen viele Tankstellen, auf dass sie die soziale und kulturelle Distanz des Viertels zum Rest von Budapest überwinden hilft.

Much-needed cross-border cooperation between trade union organisations, so that the imbalances of the labour market between Burgenland and western Hungary affect the most vulnerable on this market with less impunity. Support is provided – in terms of language and locality – as close as possible to the employees concerned, in various border towns, in factories, at border crossings. It is of definite use to the individual(s), raises awareness for the parties involved in labour market policy and reduces mutual prejudices for the public. Working together to combat incorrect enemy stereotypes, we wish you lots of staying power.

Long-term cooperation between the profit and non-profit sectors combines emergency financial aid with help to produce a lasting change in behaviour. Energy counsellors go to people’s homes, carry out an analysis and, together, they come up with energy-saving measures. Replacement of devices and interim aid for electricity bills is included if necessary. This project has a high threshold – money is not simply handed out – but it is effective. Energy-saving behaviour is an economic necessity. The success – of the energy counselling and of the cooperation between Verbund and Caritas – is checked after a year. In addition, other (energy) companies are to be involved in the project. May the project continue to ‘spark’ success!
