What is it about?

Suricate Activities cover interactive children’s activities with the purpose of integrating children with diabetes type 1 requiring life-long insulin treatment, sensitization and education of their peers or extraordinary environment classes lead by medical students on diabetes and healthy eating, in a playful way, within the peer group of the affected children.

Appreciation of the Jury

To begin with, a good cooperation of medical and pedagogic experts with the parents or legal guardians and with the child is needed. This makes it possible for all the children to deal with the new situation playfully. At the end of the Szurikáta Workshop, all the participating children get certificates attesting what they learnt. The medicine students gain practical experience and collect points for internships abroad. The workshops with Szuri Kata and Szuri Péter are part of a comprehensive sensitisation programme for the children concerned, kindergarten pedagogues, teachers and doctors; in fact, they are the programme’s innovative centrepiece. They can easily be adapted to other chronic illnesses. Inclusion fosters health.
