What is it about?
A group of students set up a team of volunteers to provide services to isolated asylum seekers in Carinthia, South Austria. Since the end of 2007, the mobile German course comes free of charge to the asylum seekers. The newly-opened office in Klagenfurt creates space for encounters between local people and asylum seekers. They learn English together here free of charge, knit together, or work together to develop their IT skills. Further language courses, which will be given by asylum seekers, are being organised. A sensitisation tour of the Carinthian towns where asylum seekers live is also planned. The students acquire internship credits as a result of their work in the project and a special class and evaluation by the educational institute are also part of the project.
Appreciation of the Jury
In 2009, the jury awarded the project a prize of €1000 for its “energetic, rebellious and kind pioneering work, which creates conditions for potential integration”.
