What is it about?
In Favoriten Prison in Vienna, a prison that specialises in work with addicts, a project called “Us Here, Arts by Women in Prison” has been using biographical drama methods to try out plays and scenes since 2004. The resulting public performances break the everyday routine of prison life and contribute to discussions on clichés and role models and how they may be changed. The focus is on women from the closed women’s prison and their biographies. Over the course of the creative process, items such as bags, audio books and films are also produced. The project has now been extended to male prisoners and has also been performed at the Theater an der Wien.
Appreciation of the Jury
The jury awarded the project a prize of €1000 in 2007 for its role in “counteracting the invisibility that seems to be the curse of female prisoners” and for its “very respectful and confidence-building endeavours”.
