Poverty makes people sick. Those who can not afford a roof over their head also have trouble paying the patient’s contributions to the health care system. The embarrassment of being discriminated against in surgeries because of being homeless, as well as the “absolutely normal” fear of dental examinations and treatment mean that many homeless people neglect their dental health to a very large extent, which has all sorts of consequences. Since 2009, the Vienna-based neunerHAUS association provides an extra medical service to all homeless people in Vienna: easily accessible, needs-oriented and affordable dental care. For four hours at a time on four days per week, a total of fourteen dentists, supported by an interdisciplinary team, work on a voluntary basis.
In 2009, the jury awarded a prize of €1000 to the “tailor-made, interdisciplinary and target group-oriented” project that “replaces pity with action as a matter of course.”
