Výzva

Store closures and migration to the outskirts of the city leave vacant spaces in the city center. This results in a lack of meeting points and services, especially for families with children. Retail entrepreneurs struggle to survive economically, while people with disabilities remain marginalized. Young social initiatives lack visibility and opportunities to present their work.

Myšlenka

Within an old building transformed by KLEINSTADTBIOTOP (KSB), a solidarity-based economic hub now flourishes. Various establishments including shops, restaurants, and offices occupy this revitalized space, while inclusive employment opportunities welcome people with disabilities. Community connections strengthen through creative programming and social innovation initiatives. Families with children enjoy dedicated spaces alongside a vibrant marketplace, workshop venues, and an art gallery showcasing local talent. Collaboration and social interaction define this renewed city center.

Aktéři

Seven dedicated volunteers comprise the board that oversees distinct operational areas ranging from retail and gastronomy to events, public relations, inclusive employment, and financial management. Inclusive workplace practices develop through partnership with Lebenshilfe, a social institution that collaborates with market hall businesses to integrate people with disabilities. Cooperative principles guide each participating business, with workdays shared among operators to streamline operations and share responsibilities.

Dopad

Downtown visibility and meaningful employment characterize the experience of disabled participants who work alongside colleagues in central business operations. Shared retail responsibilities introduced by the project have successfully reduced operational costs while improving efficiency. Beyond its immediate functions, KLEINSTADTBIOTOP demonstrates inclusion in action, inspiring other communities and businesses to develop similar models while showcasing social innovation's potential in revitalizing urban environments.

Přesah

Intergenerational connections and cross-sector collaborations address multiple social challenges through this comprehensive approach. Media coverage has expanded as interest grows, with tour requests increasing and other municipalities seeking to learn from this model. Recognition through the 2024 Inclusion Award highlighted KSB's workplace innovation achievements. European significance received acknowledgment when the project appeared in the "30 Years of Austria in the EU" exhibition, representing the diversity of initiatives supported by European Union programs.
